Abstract
The aim of this article is to present the results of research on spatial variation of socioeconomic development of rural areas of the Pomeranian Duoregion (voivodeships: West- Pomerania and Pomerania). The research material consisted of data obtained from the Central Statistical Office for the years 2005-2012, aggregated at NUTS-2 and NUTS-4 level. Data were analyzed using comparative analysis, descriptive statistics and k-means clustering algorithm. Analysis of the results indicates that over the period of 2005-2011 the Duoregion’s voivodeships did not show any relevant differences in terms of economic development, but differed in terms of their growth rates (GDP dynamics in 2007 and 2011). Analysis of the clusters of the Duoregion’s poviats showed only minor spatial variation in rural areas. The north-eastern parts of the Pomeranian Voivodeship and north-western parts of the West-Pomeranian Voivodeships were found to be more developed economically, which confirms the fact of economic diffusion occurring outside voivodeship cities.
