Abstract
The paper presents the basic objectives of the Common Agricultural Policy and rural development, and gives an overview of the cooperative nature and cooperatives in the old EU countries. Later in the article the author focuses on legal regulations and statistics on agricultural cooperatives in the Netherlands, Italy, Germany and Poland. Additionally, the paper presents the issue of the position of agricultural cooperatives in the food supply chain and points out the possibility of cooperative development in the perspective of the new Common Agricultural Policy 2014-2020. In conclusion, the author states that, on the one hand, there is the impact of the European Union, and in particular the Common Agricultural Policy, on the development of agricultural cooperatives and, on the other, cooperativeness is one of the instruments helping to implement the objectives of Common Agricultural Policy.
